Aw crap, Ga’len’s at it again…

Yup, it seems that Google Reader and I are quickly becoming good friends.  I’ve taken the time and created yet another shared items page.

With the upcoming Dominion expansion and all the discussion/rage concerning proposed changes, changes on changes and various confusing information that has been put forth, I thought I’d create something helpful.

So, enjoy all the wonderful posts our beloved community has written.  As more posts are made, I’ll add them to this shared items page!

Dominion blog posts:  http://www.google.com/reader/shared/user%2F03749674846786948488%2Flabel%2FDominion

Now, there have been some complaints that posts to various discussion threads concerning Dominion are missing from the EVE forums.  CCP is being accused of censorship.

People, remember this.  The forums are CCP’s property, they will moderate as they see fit and yes, there will be mistakes made by forums moderators.  Fear not, Chribba the All Powerful EVE Online God has a wonderful resource to combat this problem.  Head over to EVE-Search.com and you can read all the forum posts as they were originally posted.  You can’t respond to a post here, only read them.  So, head over there to read and post your responses on the EVE forums if you feel the need.

Here is the link to the EVE Information Portal section on the EVE-Search website:  http://eve-search.com/forum/3512.

So, enjoy your reading assignments, there is a lot to read!!!

…Okay, okay, I’ll say something…

something…there, I said something.  Yeah, not much there, right?

I have a problem.  A lot of people both in and out of game have been asking me about a particular CSM candidate.  People have been commenting on his EVE Forum thread in the CSM section.  Some of these comments have been very ‘rough’ and calling out various truths about this individual.

I am aware of what has been said and I honestly did not want to contribute to the discussion.  A friend and I were discussing the thread Friday evening and I have been quoted on why I’ve not contributed to the discussion.  I am not very happy that I was quoted on the thread, but as her post states, I did not say that I was speaking “off the record”.  Needless to say, I am not pleased but it’s my own fault for not ensuring that I was speaking off the record.

I honestly don’t care if this individual runs for the CSM.  I could care less.  His publicly documented lack of integrity, honor and blatant illegal activities in the real world are more than enough to put any chances of this individual actually winning a seat on the CSM on par with a snowball surviving in the depths of hell for an extended period of time.

I have the faith that  EVE Online community is smart enough to understand that this individual has no place representing the EVE player’s collective interests. I have faith in the community that they know he can not be trusted regardless of which corporation and/or alliance he currently enjoys membership. It is a bit shocking that his current alliance did not do the research on this individual to know what they brought into the midst, but I am sure they will learn how much of a problem they have brought into the fold.  Perhaps they have plans to hang him out to dry and he’s not aware of how he is being played in game as he has done to so many people who trusted him.  That would be some fitting  justice.

For everyone who has urged me to stand up and actively speak out against this individual, I do thank you all for your support, however, I will not allow this person to continue to impact my game time nor my real life.  This post will be all I will be willing to day as he’s simply not worth any other effort.

Enough said, now, go vote for the other candidates who are worthy of your attention.

Don’t hack other people’s killboards, it’s a crime in the real world you know…

I was reading the EVE forums this week and yes, I know how dangerous that can be.  You see post after post of good and not so good content.

Something caught my eye and yes, I did respond on the forums.  Head over and read this thread:  http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=884478.  Tibalt Avalon wrote:

After Emergency Conditions First War Declaration R.E.P.O. have Been Caught Posting Fake Killmails on Our Killboard. Just a Heads Up for Future Reference to Corporations these Guys are and do Post Fake Mails.

Ive Reported the On Our End to our Web Hosts but R.E.P.O’s Childish Move should be Made Public, dont know if anyone else has had the same problem with them. Kinda Sad to be Honest.

Fake Kill Mail Example:

Now, there is always smack talk between organizations that are at war with each other and to be honest, I have been a fan or R.E.P.O.  from well before their alliance days.

But this is disturbing to me as the first response on this thread was from R.E.P.O. and what is said made me blink.  Hans Gates from R.E.P.O. wrote:

I shouldn’t even reply to this, but this guys seems to want to question REPOs reputation.

Your killboard has/had a blank password. WTF…

Our guys seemed compelled to update the board with actual kills, since you don’t seem to post losses.

I’m sure one of my guys posted the kill on your killboard, who wouldn’t screw around with a web site that had a blank password.

Anyways, last thing I need to do is try to defend our rep from you. I’m sure we have enough peeps to vouch for us without your lack of forward thinking about passords and such trying to attack our reputation.

Now for the smack talk, I did call this guy a moron repeatedly in public chat. (ha beat ya to the smack accusations!)

Fly Safe and Good Fights.

I can understand the frustration of a mercenary organization not seeing loss mails posted by their target, but, in case you did not see it, Hans admits that they actually  posted kills on someone else’s killboard, without the owners permission.  I read further along and Magus Nebula admits to posting kills on their target’s killboard:

I will admit I Did post most of all the legitimate killmails on your board, funny to note how all those were deleted too! And funny no losses at all in your corp, hmmmmm, trying to frame us maybe? but none of that matters, i will be editing this post to reflect everything you have lost to date from us, so the rest of the peeps here can see.

Magus Nebula – Arbitrator (REPO)

Hacking a person’s website, no matter how soft the security may be, is still a crime.  Updating their target’s killboard to reflect the actual outcome of a battle does not justify breaking the laws concerning computer security.

There is no justification in the real world for changing the content of another person’s website without their permission.  R.E.P.O. should have stuck to simply updating their own killboard and called them out on the forums for not posting their loss mails.

The only formal statement I could find from CCP was by CCPStevieSG:

Moved to crime and punishment from Corp and Alliances summit- StevieSG

Seriously, that’s all?  The thread was moved.   Does CCP condone the hacking of a website of another player organization?   I would hope not, but we have not seen anything positive so far.

Many of us remember the Ginger Magician incident, where real world threats were made in game.  R.E.P.O. has done something similar here, they have admitted to hacking a website, on the forums.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this one as it sets a dangerous precedent.  I know that CCP can not be the police for the entire world, but they need to make a statement that they do not condone such real world harassment and hacking of another player organization’s website.

Additional commentary added 10-23-2009:

I must extend a healthy thank you to everyone who has commented here on this article so far.  I do enjoy a good debate and for everything that has been contributed I am thankful.  Given what I have seen in the on the comments here,  the comments on the thread on the EVE forums and the various communications I have received both in and out of game, I am left a bit puzzled.

Many people seem to not make the distinction between what constitutes is an illegal act.  It seems that people only think something is illegal if they can be caught and punished and/or if damage was done.

If you are driving your car and you are exceeding the speed limit, does the fact that you are violating the traffic laws become less a illegal if the cop behind you does not pull you over and issue a speeding citation?

Does something become less illegal if you are not punished for breaking that law? Does it become less illegal if you are not caught?   In reality, no, it does not.  It just means that you were not held accountable for your actions.

Is this what we have become?  Do we honestly believe something is not a crime when the law has been broken but no one was hurt, no damage was done and/or you are not caught?

We have been dancing around many questions on this debate, but the core of the issue is this.   Someone put up a website and admittedly did a poor job.  They did not engage in good security practices and effectively left the key in the lock on the door.  Someone else exploited that weakness to correct an error in data on that website.  Someone opened a door that was supposed to be locked, but was not and in reality did no damage, only update some missing data.  The owner of the website was upset that these individuals were able to exploit his poor security and correct an inaccuracy in his data which did cast the owner in a poor light, but justly so as we all can agree on that one point.

Was this act of updating a crime?  Under the laws we have discussed here, yes.  Is this crime one for which these people should be punished?  That is a question that should be left to a judge if it were to go that far, however unlikely.  A slap on the wrist for exploiting weak security on a website is enough in my mind and honestly, the slap they received on the EVE forums should suffice in this observers opinion.

Should CCP take any action against these individuals?  Only as so far as the EVE Online terms of service allow, which in this case amounts to simply talking about an illegal act they committed, which if I am not mistaken, would be a simple forum ban for a few days.  Given that this original thread is over a year old, I would be willing to wager that too much time has gone by for that to be done now if it had not already been done.  CCP is usually pretty good about that sort of thing.

I will be leaving the comments on this post open for the time being as I know that there are people who still wish to weigh in.  Something to note, I have not approved 2 comments that were submitted, both of which were abusive in nature and for the record, one did support my arguments here.

“So, the cesspool is reloaded now?…It appears so…”

Yup, Band of Brothers disbands, becomes Kenzoku and now they become Band of Brothers Reloaded.

As usual, the EVE forums are rife with discontent over the name change.  Supposedly Kenzoku leadership put in a petition to have the alliance name changed.  EVE GM’s received the petition and changed the name.  GM Grimmi even went so far to make a post on the EVE forums.

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1032494

GM Grimmi:

Yesterday we changed the name of the alliance KenZoku to Band of Brothers Reloaded as the result of a petition by their leadership. It has come to our attention that this was not a popular decision among some of our players and we’d like to take this opportunity to address those issues.

We have previously changed names provided a petition was created within a reasonable timeframe and the situation warranted such action. The leadership of KenZoku/Band of Brothers did petition us immediately after they were disbanded and their name was taken. While we worked on the petition for about two months we do not feel that they should suffer because of that. Having them disband and lose sovereignty again was not deemed appropriate in this case.

This action was limited to changing their name, as we have done before for others – we did not assist them in regaining their sovereignty after the Band of Brothers alliance was disbanded, nor did we assist with that now. Any other corporation or alliance finding themselves in the same situation would get the same treatment.

Now, I understand what this says and on the surface it looks fine.  Read the threadnaught that follows his post and you will learn that everyone is calling foul and claiming ‘dev misconduct’.  Many people want CCP to simply show an example of a petition for an alliance name change that was granted.  Many people are citing examples of such petitions that were simply denied.

The EVE forums are NOT a place to find truth as they are a cesspool that continues to fester with discontent, however, I have to agree with the rabble so far.  CCP needs to provide examples of where they have changed an alliance’s name in the past as they did for Kenzoku.

However, there is a post from Lem2J to consider:

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1031624&page=20#585

When Cult of War (COW) didnt pay the bill, the alliance was disbanded. A third party took the corp name in order to block the re-creation of Cow. I petitioned this, the corp was re-named and we paid the fee to recreate the alliance…
The same rules should apply to BOB imo, Sov should have been lost (as they did) but they should be able to retain the name.

Granted, this is not evidence provided by CCP, but rather a player bringing to light another incident of an alliance name change petition being granted.  CCP confirming the Cult of War example should difuse this situation.  I do hope they do so soon.

UPDATE:  Kenzoku name change has been reversed!!

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1033628

GM Grimmi:

We appreciate the feedback from everyone. After reviewing all of these very valid concerns, we were compelled to go back over the information we’d collected in this case and carefully weighed it again against the precedents set in the past. Ultimately, we felt we had no other recourse than to reverse the name change, the key factor being that during this re-investigation we learned that the KenZoku alliance was created several months before the BoB alliance leadership switched hands. That being the case, the name change request was not submitted within a timely manner, as it had been in the legacy cases we were holding up as examples.

We will be contacting the CSM for input regarding our naming policies.

Well, well, seems that CCP messed up on this one.  At least they fixed this in the end.  I do hope that they do bring naming issues to the next CSM meeting as they say they will.  This is obviously something that needs to be looked at and worked again.

“HAHAHA, COME GET SOME!!”….Duke Nukem

Yup, there was a lot of pew-pew this weekend.  The Sixth Alliance Tournament is underway.  Many congratulations to The Bastards in winning their match against KIA Alliance, the video of their match is below.  If you would like to see all the matches along with their commentary, you can catch all the action over at the CCP Games YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/CCPGames).

Saturday night I went on the latest adventure from Scrapheap Challenge, the SHC Gank Night number 13 (http://www.scrapheap-challenge.com/viewtopic.php?p=707686#707686).  Needless to say, 13 must have been the lucky number as we went traveled further and longer than we ever had before.  The roam lasted almost 3 hours long with a great many kills, more than we ever have had on one of these roams to date.  You can check out the Gank Night killboard (http://karbowiak.dk/kb/ganknight/?a=home) and of course, the Neo Spartans did their fair share (http://www.nspta.net/?a=cc_detail&ctr_id=12).  For a blow by blow on the roam itself, you can check out my fellow corpie Kaya Valda’s s blog entry titled “Gank Gank Gank (http://piratekaya.wordpress.com/2009/01/26/ganknight13).

Now, being the New Year, there are always changes.  In our neck of the woods, we have seen a major change.  Our CEO made the following post on Crime and Punishment on the EVE Forums (http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=981787).

I want to thank all of you who support us in our decision.  For those of you who are asking for ‘juicy details’ I will not go into those ‘juicy details’ as I really do not want to open that can of anger and disappointment again.  I will simply quote our CEO’s post:

Due to a fundamental breakdown in trust, honour and truth Neo Spartans Corporation has decided to reset Negative Ten Alliance to neutral. Here ends several months of close cooperation and fun, but the time has come for us to break free of our ties, to act as a true pirate corporation.

Qapla.

As I said, I will not go into the ‘juicy details’ as this post sums up why we no longer have Negative Ten alliance set to blue.  If you do not understand what this posting means, I shall explain.  We no longer trust the alliance leadership, we no longer consider their leadership honorable and we have issues with untruthful statements made by the alliance leadership.

Again, I wish to extend a warm thank you from all the Neo Spartans to all those who have wished us well on our recent decision.  We look forward to a bright and fun future.
