New OPML file from Mandrill

Mandrill over at I am Keith Neilson has created a new animal.

It’s cool, it’s fresh and worthy of a big thank you for what he is working to do.

He’s has a OPML file that only contains active blogs.  WOOT!

It’s streamlined and has constant maintenance to adjust for blogs that are no longer active so that you will always have access to fresh content.  He will be rotating our old blogs that are no longer active, that is, blogs that have not had a post made over a set period of time.

Why do this?  Well, OPML files grow over time with more and more blogs and you get to the point that managing such a large file becomes very time intensive.  Maintaining a OPML that only has active bloggers in it provides for a better reading experience.  It’s also gentler on the RSS reader as it doesn’t  have to check hundreds of blogs that have no updates.  Google Reader will thank you.

Head over to http://keithneilson.co.uk/eve-bloggers-opml-download for your OPML file for the most fresh EVE blogging content.

As for the OPML file I used to maintain, I will continue to do so, however, this file is more of an archive of EVE blogs, both active and quiet.  It’s nice to read the old blogs from time to time for perspective, older guides that are still useful, etc.

The EVE Player Blogs Archive OPML file:

And of course, you will always be able to read all the latest posts from the EVE Blogging Community at The EVE Online Portal at http://www.evebloggers.com.

Recently I reloaded my laptop with a brand new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.  I’m still getting things all sorted out.  I downloaded the Windows version of GIMP for Windows and started to tinker with a PSD file I pulled from the Ushra’Khan forums of the infamous U’K Fist.

So, here’s my new forums avatar for the U’K forums:

UKAvatar

and my new signature I’ll be using on forums in general:

sig2

I am by no means a master of graphics design, I leave that to my wife, but I do like to tinker.  The new avatar is okay, just has the U’K fist on the top left corner.  It’s not very visible as the color in the graphics don’t make it pop like it does on the forums sig.  I do admit, my forums sig is a bit bland.  I’ll have to come up with something nicer.  Perhaps a bit with the new planets graphics in it.

And the big news today.  There is a new dev blog titles Storming the Gates.  This dev blog discusses the upcoming sovereignty changes and there is of course a forums discussion thread.   The good news, the forums thread has not evolved into a ‘threadnaught’ as of yet.  The combat mechanics on how you take over a system that has sov are a bit clearer now and honestly, it should be a lot of fun.  I have been updating the SOV shared item page as well, so you can get all the latest from the EVE Blogging community on these upcoming changes.

See you out there!!

“Wow, like the new look…”

Yup, things have been evolving here at the old grove. I’ve been busy with a lot of things:

  • As you may see, the new banner for the site is completed and size optimized for quick download, making the site display a bit faster.  I’ve cleaned up items in the sidebar on the right side of the page, made things flow a bit better as well.
  • 00sage00 tweeted earlier this week that he activated the new mobile edition support for his blog (http://twitter.com/00sage00/status/5030443870).  He’s using the new version of WPTouch for WordPress (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wptouch).  I like how his site looked on my iPod Touch and it convinced me to deploy it here.  So, if you are like me, someone who does a lot of blog reading on their iPod Touch, you will appreciate both the configuration improvements and the beautiful layout that makes reading on a iPod Touch a much more pleasing experience.
  • I’ve deployed a the Simply Yearly Archive plugin for wordpress (http://www.schloebe.de/wordpress/simple-yearly-archive-plugin/#english).  It allows you to create a nice archive page for listing out all your posts.  I hightly recommend it!
  • Alexia Morgan at The EVE Online Portal (http://www.evebloggers.com) and I have made the decision that keeping seperate OPML download files was not useful.  We have consolidated our efforts and as you can see, things are working out well.  Head over to and check out this resource, it’s a must for anyone who plays EVE Online!
  • For those of you following blogging legislation, in the US, bloggers are now required to disclose if they have been compensated when they write an article for a product, service, website, et al.  DisclosurePolicy.org makes it very easy to write your policy for your blog with a Policy Generator tool. I do recommend that you head over there and read about the new law and how you can protect yourself from making a mistake.  I’ve added such a policy to my blog on my About page.

I’ve been busy as you can see, more to come soon!

Alexia maintains a wonderful portal for the community, The EVE Online Portal at http://www.evebloggers.com.  It’s a great resource for people to find many different pieces of information concerning EVE Online.

What I find really cool is the RSS aggregation that updates for all the EVE Online blogs in real time and thus we come to the point of my post here.

As you are well aware, I maintain an OPML download file for RSS readers for the EVE Online Community.  It’s a lot of work to maintain and I have a lot of help from the bloggers and the readers in keeping the file populated with all the EVE related blogs out there.

Alexia and I work closely together to ensure that we both have the same blogs listed in our services.  Such work in all honestly is time consuming and creates confusion.  It confuses us when we are updating our blog lists and it confuses people as to where they should go to find the latest information on EVE blogs.

As the old saying goes, the less hands in the pie, the less mess.  So will be true for OPML files for our community.

From this point forward, there will be ONE OPML Download file.   This file will be obtainable from Alexia’s wonderful site.   Alexia has given me a user account on The EVE Online Portal so we both can easily continue our work in bringing the best and most up to date EVE Blogging resources to the community.

So, please head over to The EVE Online Portal at http://www.evebloggers.com and enjoy the fruits of our labor!

Yapping about…

Well, with the new free time I have no longer being a member of leadership in the Neo Spartans, I have finally gotten some stuff updated.  For those of you who follow both of my Twitter accounts, you saw a lot of spam with updates to various tools on Facebook and many other items.  For that, I do apologize.

Social networking has a funny quirk, you need to keep things up to date.  So, if you want to keep up to date on what’s going on with me or what little ‘gems of the net’ I have found, below is the list:

With my new free time, I have been able to sort out my other blog, Riley’s Little Spot on the Web (http://dagastine.net).  This website I have had for a long time, however, it’s seen many changes.  The latest change is to simply keep track of my fiction that I write and aggregate my twitter and digg feeds.  I’ll see how it goes.

So, see you out there!!!
