“THE LIST IS IN THE OPEN!”

Casiella Truza over at Ecliptic Rift wrote a great post on how to publicize your blog (http://rift.chromebits.net/2009/12/29/8-ways-to-publicize-your-eve-online-blog).  I started to write a comment and it turned into something rather lengthy.  So, rather than clutter up his blog with a TL;DR comment, I decided to write a post.

That brings me to one of his points be discusses, point number 8, comment on other people’s blogs.  This is a great way to hold a discussion or in my case here, create inspiration for a blog post.

Some more tips to consider in no specific order:

  • I have to point out Mynxee’s comment, then point to it again and again and again…It takes time to grow a following.  Well written posts on a fairly consistent schedule will keep readers coming back.  Many bloggers start out trying to write a post every day.  Protip, don’t.  Write at least two posts a week max when starting out.  Don’t overdo it, you will burn out.
  • Write posts in advance.  I take time every Sunday to sit down and read.  I read the EVE forums, I read blog posts from other bloggers that I have starred in Google Reader and I decide what I am going to write.  I write out a few different draft posts and touch them up over the following week.
  • Mur Lafferty has a wonderful writing podcast, I Should Be Writing.  She has a great quote and I can’t remember it verbatim, but this is the sentiment, “It’s okay to suck.  Write and suck at writing.  The only way you will get better is to write, suck at it and write some more.”  Write that piece of fan fiction and let it bomb horribly.  Need some examples of bad fan fiction, read my stories.  They totally suck when compared to many of our talented fiction writers like Roc and Shae Tiann.  It’s okay that my fiction sucks, it will get better in time and more importantly, I enjoy writing the stories.
  • Don’t topic spam.  This is a very hard one to do.  With 500 blogs listed in our OPML file, the potential for posts that are on the same topic is very high.  There is nothing wrong with people talking about the same topic, say an upcoming expansion, but when there are several posts with identical content, the general reader base may tend to skip over your post.  Sometimes it’s better to keep that post as a draft and use it later, perhaps revise it with a different perspective after a day or two.
  • In reference to point number 7, I found it useful state at the top of my bio about having auto-reject turned on and to in game mail me so that I don’t encounter an ill timed chat request.  I also turned off my in game email charge so that people can contact me without having to pay isk.  When someone does contact you in game, do try to respond to them.
  • Tags.  Use tags for your posts and try to use similar tags for similar topics.  Search engines love organization and if you are consistently using tags and categories in your blog, you will increase traffic to older posts.  Just because a post is not on the first page does not mean that someone will not read it.  Remember, people add blogs to their RSS readers all the time.  Your first post from 2 years ago may be brand new to people today.
  • Spell check.  Do it, your readers will thank you.
  • Read your post aloud before you publish it.  Things you write always seem to look fine when you read them in your mind, hearing the words in your ears helps to smooth out language.  Again, your readers will thank you.
  • Revisit old posts and write new ones.  It’s funny, your perspective on something in game can change over time.  You may have really hated warp bubbles in nullsec when you were trying to take a shortcut a year ago but you may really love them now as you may be a HIC pilot.  Write a new post about how your perspective has changed and why.
  • Publish your blog to the Kindle.  I know, it sounds silly.  Why subscribe to a blog on a Kindle when you can read it in a RSS reader or web browser.  Well, some people like to subscribe to blogs and read them while traveling and while they are NOT connected to the online world.  It’s another way to expand your reader base and best of all, it’s free!
  • That’s all I can think of for right now.  If you have some tips or tricks on blogging, do contribute to the discussion over on Casiella’s blog!

Recently I reloaded my laptop with a brand new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.  I’m still getting things all sorted out.  I downloaded the Windows version of GIMP for Windows and started to tinker with a PSD file I pulled from the Ushra’Khan forums of the infamous U’K Fist.

So, here’s my new forums avatar for the U’K forums:

UKAvatar

and my new signature I’ll be using on forums in general:

sig2

I am by no means a master of graphics design, I leave that to my wife, but I do like to tinker.  The new avatar is okay, just has the U’K fist on the top left corner.  It’s not very visible as the color in the graphics don’t make it pop like it does on the forums sig.  I do admit, my forums sig is a bit bland.  I’ll have to come up with something nicer.  Perhaps a bit with the new planets graphics in it.

And the big news today.  There is a new dev blog titles Storming the Gates.  This dev blog discusses the upcoming sovereignty changes and there is of course a forums discussion thread.   The good news, the forums thread has not evolved into a ‘threadnaught’ as of yet.  The combat mechanics on how you take over a system that has sov are a bit clearer now and honestly, it should be a lot of fun.  I have been updating the SOV shared item page as well, so you can get all the latest from the EVE Blogging community on these upcoming changes.

See you out there!!

Dominion is another SWG:NGE….unless it doesn’t go live

I’ve been spending the morning reading the new Dev blog on how CCP is fixing sovereignty.  I’ve also been reading the comments thread on the EVE forums (at 23 pages at the time of this blog entry) and I have to say, the majority  of the responses are not in favor of the changes.  Most people think it will break EVE Online to the point that no one will want to be in 0.0 space.

The TL;DR version is that a typical system will take roughly 2 billion isk a month to maintain once you have it fully developed.  Given all the upgrades to the space that you can add, you simply can not generate the needed income if you are an alliance that is considered small.  I have to agree with the sentiment on the EVE forums here, this simply will not work and all the thoughts that come into my head are already being spoken on the EVE forums and the EVE Blogging community.  The best response I’ve seen on the EVE forums sums everything up by Bobby Atlas and oddly enough, it’s been quoted in post number 666 (I’m not kidding), http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1210267&page=23#666.

Yes, our beloved EVE Blogging community, in a rare event, is agreeing with the sentiment on the EVE forums.  For ease of reading, I have setup a shared Google Reader page for those responses:  http://www.google.com/reader/shared/user%2F03749674846786948488%2Flabel%2FSOV.  As more blogging articles are posted talking about the soverignity changes, I’ll add them to this shared page.

Everyone, keep reading, thinking and posting your thoughts as there are intelligent discussions going on both the EVE forums and the blogging community.

The debater in my heart is happy to see such discussion but by the same token, I am very concerned that the upcoming changes that caused this debate will simply break 0.0 in EVE.  One of two things will result.  People will simply not go to 0.0 as the risk exceedingly outweighs the rewards or many people will simply leave EVE as it’s becoming World of Warcraft in space with 0.0 becoming arenas.

Many people are claiming that these changes are going to have an NGE effect on EVE Online.  To refresh everyone’s memory, SWG:NGE was a bait and switch upgrade.  Buy the next expansion and change the game to a new game and not let anyone know about the change until after it happened.  I was there for that and let me tell you, it was not pretty.

The sovereignty changes to EVE are not another NGE.  We all can see the changes coming and that’s what makes this different.  The part of the NGE event where Sony did not listen to the players however, has the potential to happen here.  I’ve not seen such consensus of thought and discussion on the EVE forums since the proposed speed balancing.  We all remember what happened with that change, CCP listened to the players, modified what they planned and released a better patch to the game.

I hope the CCP listens to the players again and revises what they are planning on releasing on December 1.  As it stands now, they need to delay the expansion and make the changes that everyone on the EVE forums is calling for. People think it will be another NGE, I have to agree the the potential for an NGE event set of results is there.  We will have to simply wait and see.

What a week…

It’s been a busy week in real life and in game.  Where do I begin?  Work and real life have kept me out of game more than I would like, however, I have had time to finally start using some of the advanced features in Google Reader effectively, such as the public tag sharing features.  On the right hand side of the page you may see the What’s Going on Now Widget.  It’s an announcement ticker and I’ve been linking some items in there, such at the latest blog banter public page, ad for The EVE Online Portal (http://www.eve-bloggers.com) and what not.

I’ve also added a sidebar widget for general stuff I share out of Google Reader for things I think are worth sharing and no, it’s not all EVE related.  You can follow it at My Shared Google Reader Items.

Here’s what was on the plate for this week:

See you out there!!

Central ONLINE!…

Alexia maintains a wonderful portal for the community, The EVE Online Portal at http://www.evebloggers.com.  It’s a great resource for people to find many different pieces of information concerning EVE Online.

What I find really cool is the RSS aggregation that updates for all the EVE Online blogs in real time and thus we come to the point of my post here.

As you are well aware, I maintain an OPML download file for RSS readers for the EVE Online Community.  It’s a lot of work to maintain and I have a lot of help from the bloggers and the readers in keeping the file populated with all the EVE related blogs out there.

Alexia and I work closely together to ensure that we both have the same blogs listed in our services.  Such work in all honestly is time consuming and creates confusion.  It confuses us when we are updating our blog lists and it confuses people as to where they should go to find the latest information on EVE blogs.

As the old saying goes, the less hands in the pie, the less mess.  So will be true for OPML files for our community.

From this point forward, there will be ONE OPML Download file.   This file will be obtainable from Alexia’s wonderful site.   Alexia has given me a user account on The EVE Online Portal so we both can easily continue our work in bringing the best and most up to date EVE Blogging resources to the community.

So, please head over to The EVE Online Portal at http://www.evebloggers.com and enjoy the fruits of our labor!
