Finally, another week is done

Work has been keeping me busy and getting things ready for the holidays at home has taken a good amount of my free time.  It’s been a busy week in EVE as well as many people are getting ready for the Dominion expansion to go live in less than 2 weeks now.

December 1st is patch day.  So, everyone, sort out your training plans, remember to set a long skill on Sunday, November 28th and go Christmas shopping.  We are all getting a break from EVE for a day or so, take advantage of it.  Spend some time offline, buy that special someone a nice meal for dinner and enjoy the break.

This week’s highlights:

  • Upcoming sovereignty changes continue to be discussed on the EVE forums, through additional Dev blogs and the EVE Blogging community.  You can read all the articles on this shared items page (yes, I do love Google Reader).
  • It’s been a while since I tinkered with Sniper drone fits, Gremond reminded me of that fun with his recent blog post (http://gremrod.blogspot.com/2009/11/drone-sniper-fit.html)
  • EVE-Mag.com has had a great series of episoded in a wonderful work of fan-fiction, Vengeance of the State.  Head over and read this story, it’s really entertaining.
  • The CSM elections end on the 26th, be sure to go vote!
  • Our beloved Lord Makk of the Ushra’Khan has released some entertainment for the masses, head over to the EVE Forums Thread for links and comments.

EVE Blog Pack Profile: Colonel Roc Wieler

We of the EVE Blog Pack have started a new feature, the profile post.  This is a posting to introduce many of you to our fellow bloggers and to give you some background on these fine people.

Name/Handle: Colonel Roc Wieler
Blog URL: Roc’s Ramblings at http://everamblings.wordpress.com
Faction: Minmatar Republic
Started EVE: 2006

What brought me here:
My love for science fiction has been something inspired in me since I first Star Wars at the theatre as a kid. I loved the richness of the mythology, the vastness of the universe; the true sense of wonder. So naturally, I played Star Wars Galaxies the day it came out. Played dedicated for five years. The last two years though, I noticed the game was continually being dumbed down. I hate dumbed down. I enjoy depth. Someone mentioned EVE Online to me, and well, been here ever since. Even gave up Star Wars for it, my childhood love.

Playstyle:
I am a Fleet Commander for the Tribal Liberation Force, as well as recently promoted to Fleet Commander in my corp, Freeform Industries. I do missions every now and then, but my real passion is the market. Both my alts are out of the box traders, and I really enjoy the cutthroat nature of doing business.  I’ve never mined, never even opened research or industry, and have never managed a corp. One step at a time.

What keeps me playing:
Ironically, there are two things. The first is that you don’t need to be here 23/7 for fear of missing out on some huge event. That flexibility combined with real time skill training (as opposed to mindless grinding) makes it great for me. During the week, I’m a casual player, and that’s just fine. The second reason I’ve already mentioned indirectly. Depth. Vastness. Mythology. EVE Online is so comprehensive that I am STILL catching up on my reading, just to absorb myself deeper into this universe we call home.

What I write:
My personal blog is all in character (with occasional exception). My approach to writing is a little different than most I am told. I tend to merge real life happenings with ingame happenings, with a bit of complete fantasy mixed in to throw you off. So far, it’s been fun. I am also a columnist over at http://www.eve-mag.com and hope to also get an article or two into EON Magazine. That would be something.

Other Interests:
I am also a co-developer for Capsuleer, the definitive iPhone application for EVE Online. I enjoy making 3D wallpapers as well, and have contributed some to the EVE Online galleries.

What you should know about EVE:
It’s intimidating when you start; overwhelming actually. It’s like learning a new Operating System and learning how to live in a completely new universe all at the same time. But stick with it, seriously. The rewards are worth it.

The Bleeding Rose

I like to read things that engage my mind as well as my imagination. I also like to write.  Well duh, I have a blog, it’s obvious that I like to write!!

Playing EVE Online provides me with inspiration from time to time to write fiction.  The immersion in the EVE universe of the game just lends itself to storytelling.

The Bleeding Rose is a name for my ship I came up with one afternoon. It’s a good name for a ship being flown by a pirate. Below are links to each of the episodes in the order they were released. Join Ga’len and his mates in his adventures roaming about New Eden!!!!

Yarr-ing good times

I have been having fun with my new corp. a war or two, some PvP here and there. All and all, I am enjoying my time.

So, what am I going to write here? Yet another tale of how I hunted down, locked and popped another player. Of course, but I think it needs something else. Something more entertaining. Here we go.

Captain Ga’len and his trusted crew are in deep space, traveling to the northern regions of EVE when an incoming message sounds on the com.

“Captain, I have an incoming emergency message from GuardianXM. He is engaging with a Raven class battleship and needs help.”

“Helm, come about and engage full warp drive!!!” I shout, “contact the base, tell them to have the ‘Pulse’ ready for immediate departure!!”

The ‘Genolin’ is moving at top speed and makes it back to the base. The ‘Pulse’ was ready when our crew arrived on the bridge.

“Undock and set course for Hiliban.” We fly as fast as we can. Additional coms from GuardianXM show that he is holding on as long as he can.

We jump into Hiliban and warp to our fellow captain. “Red alert!! All crew to battle staions!!! Prep the drones for immediate launch!!!”

We drop out of warp and there is the raven. He’s pounding away on GuardianXM’s Thorax class cruiser. There is debris all over the area, pieces of his ship floating about. He’s been in a tough fight.

“Lock target, engage NOS and Neuts!!! Engage scrammers and launch drones!!!”

“Open a channel to GuardianXM. We are here and engaging, if you need to retreat to repair damage, please do so. We will continue the fight!!”

GuardianXM stays a while longer and has to warp out, the damage to his vessel is too great to continue the fight. We dig in and hold our ground. Slowly, the drones work their way through the Raven’s shields, then armor and finally structure.

We have lost our shields and armor repair nanites are holding the ground as a large blue light fills the view screen. The raven is destroyed.

“Recall the drones and move in to the wreck, prepare recovery teams and salvage what we can from the wreck. Good job everyone!!”

We are able to recover some useful modules from the debris. We rendezvous with Captain GuardianXM and split the booty. It’s yet another good day for company.
