Busy Weekend

This weekend was very busy both with real life and EVE related activities.

Friday evening I did not spend playing EVE Online.  In stead, I took my wife to see a show at the theater that she had been wanting to see for over a year now.  I took her to see Wicked (http://www.wickedthemusical.com).  Now understand, I am not real big on musicals.  I was tortured as a young child to sit and watch the “classic American musical” all the time.  Well, torture is too rough a word.  Exposed to the point of not liking musicals would perhaps be a better choice of words.

Getting back to Friday night, I was entertained.  The story, I will not ruin it for those of you who have not seen this show, is engaging.  Filled with references to the original story of the Wizard of Oz, you gain an interesting insight into the character of the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’.  Strong performances from all in the show, I do recommend that you go see this if you can.

In game fun was mostly on Saturday.  It was a good day for gate camping.  We spend a lot of time with our friends in Rancer, catching a lot of battle cruiser traffic.   Needless to say, we made some isk on ransoms, we had a lot of pew-pew.  Me and a corp mate did something that was rare, we actually caught a falcon (http://www.eve-druid.com/kb/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=15615).  How did we do it?  Well, the cloak was not fitted, so, the good ole cloak and align trick or warp cloaked didn’t work for this guy.  The ’stick in your mind’ moment of the weekend however is a toss up between the falcon kill and the poor soul who lost his ship and then wanted to get his stuff that dropped back.   Yup, we ransomed the dropped loot back to that poor soul.

That’s right, you did read that right, we ransomed the dropped items.  In case you have never done this, let me explain how it works.  On occasion, we get convoed by the victim that has fallen prey to our trap.  They loose their ship and make it out, either by being pod killed or they escape.  Anyway, the convo with the victim usually involves either they are abusive and want their stuff back or they are actually very pleasant.  In this case, the poor fellow was very polite and patient.  He simply wanted some of the stuff that survived the encounter.  He was willing to pay for the items and safe passage.  So, what happened?  He got his stuff back and was able to safely take it back to high sec.

Yuppers.  That’s how you do a ransom.  There is nothing that says a ransom has to be for simply letting someone go through a gate camp.  You can ransom some-one’s items back to them if they are worth a lot of isk.  You can ransom some-one’s pod for a simple joke (usually reserved for newer players).  Heck, I’ve evened ransomed a miner back the ore I took from him.  He was very happy to get the past 4 hours of secure jet can filled work back.

Never underestimate what people are willing to pay for a ransom.  My favorite of all time, was a funny joke, once a week for 3 months.  No, I’m not kidding.  I ransomed a fellow over a year ago.  He was a new player, only 2 weeks old.  I got him stealing loot from me and I locked down his pod.  The original ransom was for only a single joke, but HE talked me into jokes every week for 3 months.

I tell ya, this game has some serious lolz moments.

Some action last night

It was a fairly quiet night tonight.  Not much traffic coming through the gate, so, we decided to track down some of the neutrals that were in system.  We chase a rupture away, 3 flashy reds warping into a belt is always a good way to clear the room.

It’s pretty empty in system, so, we decide to try to locate the only other neutral in system as this point.  I warp into a belt and ding, the 2 year old pilot in a Jaguar is here.  I am in my Devoter, I lock him up and hit him with the ever popular inifinte point that the Heavy Interdictor uses so well.

My corpies are on their way as the Jag pilot tries to escpae.  Devoter’s are great for their intedicting ability, rather weak on DPS.  Tacklers usually are weak in that department.  As my corpies drop out of warp in the belt, I think for a second that the Jag has popped.  There is a pod on my overview.

He ejected and insta-warps away.  Wow, free ship.  I guess his implants were worth more than the 10 mil ship with the 10 mil in fittings.

Score one for a free ship in the corp hanger.

Tags anyone?

It’s been a quite week for me in EVE as I have been working a lot lately.  When I am able to get online, it’s much later in the evening for the European time zones.  As a consequence, most of my corpies are offline, tucked in and sleeping nicely in their beds.  So, what to do?  Well, solo roam time.

Or so I thought.  As I undock in my favorite nano roaming ship.  I head to the POS to check on the tower’s resources real quick and I notice a great deal of smaller ship traffic coming through the gates.  Yup, gate camping time.  I quickly hop into my bomber and head for the gate.

I’m sitting there, ninja camping without a scout, bombing shuttles as they come through.  Not high on the kill scale really.  The point is not for awesome fights, but to add isk to our wallet.  From time to time, you get that Nirvana like kill, such as implants or BPO’s as my corpie discovered the other night.

What do I get for my efforts last night?  Tags.  Just a few tags.  Okay, a boatload of tags.  So many tags I can say that I am a bit “tagged out’ but don’t take my word for it, take a look for yourself:

Needless to say I was able to use my scout/hauler alt to sell the all that did drop, 15 mil in all.  Killboard isk counts are notorious for not being very accurate, but 15 mil for ten minutes of sitting on the gate is not bad.  After that, traffic completely died off aside from an Axoim Alliance Dominix with a huge buffer tank setup.  Needless to say, being alone, in a bomber battleship, is no match and it was time to head to bed.

A corp mate scores big

In a previous post, I mentioned a nice take on smartbombing a gate.  One of my corp mates topped my last take in a big way, take a look at the kill:

Yup, that’s what you think it is.  Fenrir BPO’s, here’s the screenie for proof:

Slow traffic

Over the past few weeks since the summer ended, traffic coming through the pocket has been slow.   Now, for most people, that would not be an issue, but when you are a shivering timbers yarr machine pirate, it makes for a dull evening.

So, what do you do?  You setup a scout and get your smartbombing ship and make sure you catch all the traffic that comes through.

How does this work?  Well, you find a gate that is traveled in low sec and put your smartbombing ship in line between the two gates so that when the incoming ship drops out of warp, you can hit it with 8 large smartbombs and with luck, all of them will hit the incoming ship and pop it.

A destroyer with a rep running will get through, but shuttles, noob ships and inteceptors stand a good chance of getting popped.

Why would you do this?  For the challenge of the timing of the kill.  For the pretty explosions.  And for this, the loot (http://www.eve-druid.com/kb/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=15068).

This tactic works well for catching traffic when you are camping all on your own.
