“Slideshows?? Stackless I/O makes PowerPoint look fast”

Last night was a lot of fun.  I logged on to find that all my corpies were engaged in a 80 on 80 man fig.  Cry Havoc and Noir jumped my corpies while they were on a POS bash.  So, what did we do?  We fought.  We stood our ground and when we lost ships, we went and got more ships.

The first kill was logged at 22:05 game time and the last kill was logged at 23:29.  Yup, over an hour of going at it.  In the end, there were heavy losses on both sides, a battle report from our killboard can be found at http://www.nspta.net/?a=kill_related&kll_id=59268.  In a word, it was epic. This is why we play EVE, for the fights.  We have all learned a lot about how well our tactics are working and we have had a lot of fun.

So, who won the fight?  We all did.  Noir, Cry Havoc, Neo Spartans, Negative Ten.  We all had fun in an all out fight even with the gameplay crippling lag.  Lag.  Epic lag like you used to see on Sundays in Jita before Stackless I/O was deployed.  CCP has worked very hard to address the lag issue, but they are still a very long way away from having the issue resolved.  When a 80 person fleet engages another 80 man fleet, things should not simply come to a crawl.  Loss mails after the engagement kept coming for another hour after the fighting was over.  Epic lag still lives in EVE.  CCP, you still have a long way to go, keep working on it.

In the mean time, many thanks for the epically good fights and see you out there!!!!

More dev blogs

Our long lost economist has returned, we have our quarterly new letter that we all have been missing:

http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=594

We also have a dev blog about the EVE Performance Group.  These folks work on the the Stackless IO project as well as EVE 64 and many of the upcoming enhancements that I have mentioned like the weapon linking.  The blog has some good information and gives you an idea of what they have been working on.  These kinds of update have been all to sparse over the past several months, it’s nice to see that they are becoming more active with the community again.  Anyway, the dev blog can be found here:

A new age in network technology is here

A short while ago, CCP deployed their new Stackless IO technology to address the lag issues in Jita with great success.  Now, Stackless IO has been deployed to the entire EVE cluster and to be honest, things seem faster.

You can read the entire dev blog on the CCP website:

Good discussion, as always, can be found in the comments to the dev blog:

New dev blog, Stackless IO and the hope that Lag will go away

It’s an interesting technical discussion and honestly, I do think it will help.  Unfortunately, with all efforts in reducing lag, it will only delay the inevitable.  As system capacity is able to expand, users will fill that capacity.

With luck and continued development, this will stem the tide of lag that has been ruining our favorite game.  I do applaud CCP’s efforts in this.  It’s nice to finally see the work they have been doing.  We have been in the dark far too long.

There is a forum thread on this devblog, check it out:
